Tom Burton wins in Rio Olympic Test Event

 5o5 - World Championship 2014 - Kiel GER
The Laser Medal Races of the 2014 Olympic Test Event in Rio were sailed  in a moderate 10 kn breeze.
The second-ranked Nick Thompson GBR could not start to the Laser Standard Medal Race because of a back injury caused by a collision during a start the day before. Thanks to a sufficient points reserve, he at least earned the Bronze medal. With the abandonment of his direct opponent, the leader Tom Burton AUS had an easy defense of his first place finally with a 10 points advantage. Rutger van Schaardenburg NED moved up on rank 2. The World Champion Robert Scheidt BRA was once more disappointing and finishing only 8th in the Medal Race, he missed the Bronze medal by 4 points. Winner of the day was Francesco Marrai ITA, already best of the previous day in light winds.
Anne-Marie Rindom DEN realized her first win in a Laser Radial top event. Starting to the Medal Race as 3rd, she profitted from the duel between the at-equal-points leading duo Evi Van Acker BEL and Tuula Tenkanen FIN. Down-sailed on the ranks 8 and 9, they had to let pass the Danish women finishing 3rd in the Medal Race, and even Allison Young GBR as 2nd moved up on rank 2 overall. Evi Van Acker BEL had to content herself with Bronze, while Tuula Tenkanen FIN remained without Medal as 4th.
