Report: Oceania and Australian Open Laser Championships 2018

The Open Laser Championships for 2018 were held in Brisbane and hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. A total of 175 Lasers competed across 4.7, Radial and Standard rigs in breezes ranging from 6 knots up to 20 knots gusts on windward – leeward courses. The days were hot with mostly good afternoon sea breezes and occasionally the threat of an afternoon thunderstorm. Bruce Kirby appointed to Order of Canada

    Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, has made 125 new appointments to the Order of Canada. The new member list includes 4 Companions (C.C.), 35 Officers (O.C.) and 86 Members (C.M.). Among the honorees was Bruce Kirby, C.M. (Ottawa, Ont. and Rowayton, Ct.) for his contributions to the world of sailing, notably for his internationally acclaimed sailboat designs.

    Kirby has previously been inducted into the US National Sailing Hall of Fame (2012) and Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame (2014).

    Created in 1967, the Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Close to 7 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.

    Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and have taken to heart the motto of the Order: DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM (“They desire a better country”).

    Appointments are made by the governor general on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada.

    2018 ILCA Laser Worlds

    Important information for submitting applications to compete in Laser World Championships in 2018.

    (1) Applications for entry for the following Laser World Championships will be accepted from Tuesday, 9 January through Tuesday, 20 February:

    •    2018 ILCA Laser Radial Men’s World Championship
    •    2018 ILCA Laser Under-21 World Championships
    •    2018 ILCA Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships

    Please ensure your sailors are aware that if they do not apply by the 20 February 2018 application deadline they may have little chance to receive an entry offer. Continue reading

    Laser Class Rule Changes Approved

    In 2017 there were four rule change proposals put forward before the ILCA class membership for vote. All four changes were approved by more than two-thirds of voting members in addition to being approved by the World Council, the Advisory Council and World Sailing, all of which are required in order to modify class rules.

    Class Rule Changes Approved

    Effective beginning 1 January 2018

    1) Electronic Compasses

    Rule 22 was changed to allow the use of certain electronic digital compasses that are not GPS Enabled. ILCA will maintain a list of approved compasses on the ILCA website as an interpretation to the Class Rules. This rule change was approved with 81% “Yes” votes.
