2016-03-13 13.56.26Somers YC is situated in a coastal bush setting on the shores of Western Port Bay in Victoria. Ample parking & rigging areas are surrounded by Ti-tree, Banksias & Manna gums. Koalas & other wild life are often sighted at the club. The clubhouse faces south to Bass Strait & in the distance the ocean swell can be seen breaking at ‘The Nobbies’ on the tip of Phillip Island. The sailing area is protected by a massive sand bank that runs along the shipping channel on the SE side of the bay. During registration on Saturday morning Laser sailors were greeted by a pod of local dolphins not more than 10 metres from shore feeding on the incoming tide. Continue reading

Monday morning at 7.30 and the sun is pouring down on the bay. The smell of bacon and egg rolls had most of the volunteers flowing over to the canteen where the ladies were working hard to prepare the food. Just what was needed to get the juices going for what appears to be the end game for the number of tournaments that have evolved this weekend.
The easterly freshened up a little around 9am as the competitors made their way out onto the water and talking to GBYC past commodore Keith Stewart, he had a fair idea that it would start to track into the nor west and freshen further. Promptly at 9.30, the racing got underway with the standards being fired off first, followed by the radials both on the outer trapezoid while the 4.7’s took the inner course. Continue reading

The 2016 WA Laser State Championships

K5RS0266Lachy Gilham “getting the boat going”
The first day of the 2016 Laser State Championships at GBYC Busselton

Nearly 80 boats fronted on the line today at sunny Busselton off the beach at Geographe Bay Yacht Club. Two races were slated for today and after a false start caused by a change in the wind direction; racing began in earnest at 4 pm as a nor-wester settled in across the bay.
RO Robyn Olsen had the fleets away briskly and the first of the radial fleet began to spill around the top mark in quick time. The breeze was starting to swing to the left and by the end of the afternoon was almost due west with not a sign of the abrupt change that signifies the sou-wester booming past the capes.
Local knowledge has its pleasure and it was without surprise that the locals swung into the shore to pick up the breeze that was coming through on the left of the course. Listening to one of the younger full rig sailors today, he said that he hadn’t sailed down at Busselton for a while, but it didn’t take him long to catch the shore breeze and neither did everyone else.
The two races had everyone spilling into the shore as the sun was setting in the West over Cape Naturaliste and all we had was the time to grab a quick snag in a roll and then head off home for a shower and perhaps dinner with friends. Continue reading

The 2016 WA Laser State Championships are about to commence

Posted in Championships by admin.

The WA Laser States are nearly here and with the promise of fine weather and good sailing, over 70 of the states finest have booked their trip and their accommodation in Busselton.
Geographe Bay will now play host to some of the best sailors in the state and with the added fillip of interstate visitors joining us in the radial class, it’s sure to be a great occasion.
Underscoring the competition in the radial class we have twice world radial men’s champion Tristan Brown, who has decided to have another push at the states. He’ll come up against Conor Nicholas, Sam King of Tasmania, Zac Littlewood and local sailor Caelin Winchcombe. In the female radial class, it’s good to hear that that Elyse Ainsworth will be giving Zoe Thompson a run for her money.
The full rigs have the company of under 21 Australian champion Lachy Gilham and FSC’s Mark Wong, both in the mix and firing along well at present. James Stewart will be a player and I’m sure that some of the local Apprentice masters will be keeping the youngsters honest. As this is an Olympic year, we are missing some of the top contenders, but the local representation will do very well without the cream at the top.
The 4.7’s have their own games to play and after the successful time on the water at the Nationals at Belmont in Sydney, Rome Featherstone took the cake with both the Open and Under 18 Laser National Championship titles. Snapping at his heels was Hayden Coote, taking second in the open 4.7 and first in the Under 16’s. Finn O’Dea of FSC and locals Djarrah Audet and Riley Nail will all be in the mix. In the female division local Hailey Johnson took the 4.7 national championship and is set to do well at this regatta.
Of course the Masters will have their own competitions going on and there will be the usual shenanigans as they ply their craft on the water. Anything goes with these veterans and after the recent Australian masters at Port Stephens, they will be keen to sort out their stuff.
The recent addition to our sponsors of the Department of Sports and Recreation through Lottery West must not be forgotten and the generosity of all the sponsors to make this event possible is appreciated. Gold Sponsors, the City of Busselton, are thanked for their help and they welcome the sailors, volunteers and families who will join together at Geographe Bay over the March long weekend to take part in the 2016 WA Laser Open States.

Many thanks to the Perth based race teams who will be coming down for the event to assist the racing team at Geographe Bay Yacht club
